MANATEE COUNTY HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

Manatee County Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with God and people everywhere to develop communities by building houses so that there are decent houses in communities in which people can live and grow into all that God intends. Habitat builds houses in partnership with families who qualify for homeownership based on three criteria:

Need: Are families living in substandard housing?  Is the present housing adequate for the family?   Does present housing cost too much?  Would this program provide an opportunity for home ownership for families who wouldn't, because of their income level, qualify for a commercial mortgage?

Willingness to partner with Manatee County Habitat for Humanity: Homeowner candidates must be willing to work at least 300 to 500 minimum hours of "sweat equity" on their own or another Habitat home side by side with other volunteers, and attend at least 14 hours of nurturing classes on parenting, budgeting, home ownership, and home repair skills. They must also be willing to apply for SHIP (State Housing Initiative Program) or other available funds.

The ability to repay a no-interest mortgage: Will the family be able to pay a 30-year no-interest mortgage and handle the other expenses associated with home ownership (taxes, insurance, utilities and maintenance) as well as other living expenses on their current income?
