Helping out with the construction of a Habitat for Humanity home can be a richly rewarding experience. It's a great way for anyone in the construction trades to give something back to the community. Both skilled and unskilled volunteers are needed.
Do you have construction skills?
If we are to reach and sustain our goal of building 20 homes a year by 2010, we need more volunteers with construction skills. We need people with construction knowledge who can give us an occasional weekday or Saturday morning to serve as a crew leader or site supervisor on one of the houses. The volunteer positions that are needed most are:
Construction Crew leader Habitat for Humanity needs people with some construction skills and people skills who can volunteer on Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday as Crew Leader. The Crew Leaders show the unskilled volunteers what to do, but always have the Construction Manager to go to if they have questions. The houses are simple, so Crew Leaders don't need to know everything about construction. They just have to be willing to work with small groups of eager, unskilled volunteers.
Project Coordinators Contractors or homebuilders who are retired, or have time in their schedule to give one-to-two days each week to assist in overseeing the construction of the house, help us supervise the unskilled volunteers, keep the house on schedule, and work with the Construction Manager to see the house from start to finish.
Mid-Week Habitat Construction Volunteers Habitat needs a few good retirees or others who have a day off during the week to volunteer to work on our Mid-Week (Tuesday or Thursday) Construction Crews. You don't need to come every week, but once you get started you may want to because it's so much fun. You don't need any construction skills, but you will have plenty after a few months.
Masons, Electricians and Plumbers One of our greatest and most costly needs in house construction in the specific skill that can only be performed by licensed masons, electricians and plumbers. Anyone who has professional experience in these fields is a highly prized volunteer. We work flexibly with scheduling.
Do you want to help, but not interested in construction? No Problem, join us at our ReStore!
We need volunteer help at our ReStore! The ReStore receives donations of new & used building materials, furniture, applicances, etc...that we sell to the public and use the proceeds to help with home building. Volunteers at our ReStore answer phones, help customers, process donations, and much, much more! The ReStore needs volunteer help Tuesday through Saturday, from 9 am until 5 pm. You can pick the shift that best fits your schedule.
To volunteer for any of these roles, please call the Volunteer Programs Manager at the Habitat office at (941) 748-9100 ext. 104.
